In the third match of pool play down here at the Mt. Pulaski Fall Festival, the Lady Norsemen were able to shoot down the attack of the Macomb Bombers, winning in two sets, 25-17, 25-13.
With the netplay of Mattie Chapman, Megan Williams, KJ Friestad, Naomi Sweeney, and Madi Malone, the Bombers weren't able to figure out how to get past the wall being put up. Many times when the snuck one past the block, the defense was in a position to pull up the ball, including a team-leading digs by Meggie Scott with 11 followed by Cassidy Adams with 6. Malone added to her career kill total by nailing down 11 while Chapman and Williams were strong, hitting 6 and 4 respectively. Chapman and Sweeney each added two blocks, while Sweeney was able to serve up 2 aces. Taylor Christian had 23 assists with no errors. Friestad, Malone, and Williams all recorded a block in the Norsemen defense. Lex Lohrey, Scott, and Malone were all perfect from the service line in this final match of pool play. The Lady Norsemen will now play at 1:00 PM in the semi-finals against 2A powerhouse St. Thomas More out of Champaign. The Sabers are currently 13-1 in the season and are one of two teams that defeated the girls from Newark in the 2018 season. Last year's loss came during this same semi-final match in three sets (26-28, 27-25, 15-11). In addition to the Norsemen and Sabers, the other two teams in the championship bracket include the Eureka Hornets (9-4) and the Maroa Trojans (12-2).
