"They are firing on all cylinders," commented one person as they spoke about the Lady Norsemen's performance in front of another capacity crowd at Newark Community High School. The reigning state champions looked like they were in mid-season form as they served up aces, dug balls that were impossible to dig, passed balls to the setter like the serves were backyard pepper drills, and pounded the perfect sets like the ball was sitting on a tee...all during the third match of the 2019 campaign. The Lady Norsemen squashed any luck that the Lady Irish of Seneca brought into Newark city limits. If you weren't there, you missed a good one! One of the highlights of the evening came in the second set with the score 16-4. A free ball came over to Naomi Sweeney who passed it perfectly to Taylor Christian who put a perfect set up for junior, outside hitter, Madi Malone. Malone got a perfect tip over the top of a double block to score her 1,000 kill in her career (watch the play here). Malone ended up adding one more kill in the evening before being subbed out. She grabbed the all-time kill leader last season and continues to add to the record on every successful one. Along with her kills, Malone ended the match with a team-high 4 aces and was able to come up with 9 digs. Mattie Chapman had a big game at the net, pounding down 7 kills on 10 attempts, had a solo block, 2 digs, and an ace. Christian had her career-high assists tonight with 24 finger-pushes and no errors to go along with her 3 digs to help in the cause. Meggie Scott led the team defensively with 13 digs, while Sweeney pulled up 8 digs, had an ace and a kill. Megan Williams crushed 6 kills to go with her 3 digs. Cassidy Adams continued her perfect streak from behind the line, serving 10 in a row, including 9 points and 1 ace. Adams also added two digs as a defensive specialist. On Saturday, the girls head down to the Manteno Early Bird Classic where they are the two-time defending champions. We will send a tournament schedule some time tomorrow.
