The girls from Newark made the 2+ hour trip down to the Mt. Pulaski Fall Festival. As predicted, the competition was going to be strong and the Norsemen would be challenged. However, after the last ball was served long in the second match, the Lady Norsemen tallied their 16th victory in a row.
In the 5:00 PM match, Newark started firing on all cylinders as they completely dominated the opening set (25-9) against the near local Lutheran team from Springfield. The Crusaders came into the match with a solid 10-2 record. After the Lady Norsemen set Madi Malone and Megan Williams a few more times, the Crusaders would fall to 10-3 on the year. The final score of set two, 25-8. Newark improved to 15 wins. Malone finished with 14 kills, 7 digs, 3 blocks, and perfect serving. Williams pounded down 6 kills, 1 block and ace, and also served 100%. Taylor Christian was spot on tonight with her sets, putting up 23 assists with zero errors while serving 15 for 15 from the line scoring 2 aces. On top of that, Christian had 4 digs and kill to boot. KJ Friestad had 3 blocks and 3 kills, while Mattie Chapman added 2 blocks for the match. Meggie Scott had 6 digs, 10 for 10 serving, and 3 assists. In the 7:00 PM match, the Eastland Cougars brought their A-game to Mt. Pulaski. In the first set, the Norsemen could not get into system, allowing a dozen kills by their opponents. The first set went to the Cougars, 25-22. In the second set, a quick adjustment by Coach Grayson had the Lady Norsemen getting several more touches at the net, creating more opportunities for the defense to get more digs and even better passes. The second set was controlled by Newark most of the way, winning 25-19. In the third set, the race to 15 was on. The Norsemen started with the serve and led the entire set, including point number six being awarded due to a red card given to the Cougar bench. That led to an eventual long serve by Eastland and the Lady Norsemen won their 16th of the year 15-10. Williams had a solid game with 10 kills, 2 aces, a block and a dig. Malone pounded down another baker's dozen while getting 4 digs, 1 ace, and 1 assist. Chapman was crushing the ball for 7 kills, 4 digs, and 2 blocks. Christian finger-pushed 27 assists, dug up 8 balls and was 7 for 7 from the service line. Scott led the defense with 9 digs while Sweeney popped up 8 of her own. Friestad was strong again from the line, serving 10 for 11. She also pounded down 2 kills on 3 attempts while digging up 3 balls of her own. Cassiday Adams was zeroed in from start to finish, hitting all 9 of her serves. Newark will now play Macomb tomorrow at 10:00 AM at Zion Lutheran School located at 203 S Vine St, Mt. Pulaski, IL. Macomb is currently 2-0 in the pool play as well, beating both teams in two straight. This evening, they defeated Lutheran, 28-26, 25-18.
